Biography
Cameron Overton is an assistant professor of social work and the program director for vnsr威尼斯城官网登入’s substance abuse counseling program. He is also the director of the college’s Master of Social Work program which he helped develop.
In his role at the college, Overton helps to create new substance abuse courses from beginning to completion, and teaches a number of courses including substance abuse rehabilitation, mental health and substance abuse, criminal justice reform, youth mentoring intervention, social work practice methods, treating problem substance use, social work toward abolition, the war on drugs, and abolition, feminism, now.
Overton has over 10 years of experience in the social work profession, and most recently served as the Drug Treatment Court coordinator with Milwaukee County Combined Court Operations. In this role he worked to identify and resolve system, program and policy issues while also working to ensure compliance of current policy and procedure. Prior to that, he worked for the Milwaukee County Behavioral Health Division, La Causa Inc. and Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin Community Services. Overton has extensive experience working with children and families, and with substance abuse treatment and rehabilitation. He is also passionate about LGBTQIA inclusion and equity, and examining the systems around social work and working to eliminate the constructs of oppression and racism that exist within those systems.
Overton earned his Bachelor of Arts in Social Work from the University of Wisconsin – Madison and his Master of Social Work from the University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee. He is currently working toward his Doctor of Social Work at the University of St. Thomas – Minnesota. He is the executive pastor at Zao MKE Church where he works to facilitate safe places for LGBTQIA inclusion in religious spaces. He’s a member of the National Association of Social Work, and a board member of the Friends of Treatment Court. He previously served as a board member for the Wisconsin Association of Treatment Court Professionals and a member of the Family Drug Treatment Court Steering Committee.
